Bungee Trampolines: Discover New Heights

November 30th, 2011

Trampoline jumping has literally been taken to new heights with the launch of a gravity-defying, adrenaline-pumping sport known as bungee trampoline, introduced by the world of extreme sports. In bungee trampoline, the jumper has an adjustable harness attached to the waist, connected to bungee ropes on both sides. This allows various types of somersaults and other air.orne aerobics as the jumper is catapulted up to 12 to 14 meters in the air.

Bungee trampolines can be set up on almost any high footfall outdoor or indoor locations such as amusement parks, beaches, swimming pools, summer camps, schools, festivals, acrobatic training centers, water parks, gymnasiums, etc.

Most Bungee Trampolines are built from high quality materials such as aluminum and stainless steel and should fulfill certain safety standards and regulations. Anyone who weighs between 45 to 200 pounds can comfortably participate in a bungee trampoline jumping. Experience is not needed except for extreme stunts and aerobics, which should never be attempted without the supervision of a professional. Another advantage with bungee trampoline jumping is that even people with certain physical disabilities can take part because the harness attached to the waist makes it much safer than conventional trampolines.

A single jumping unit may have more than one trampoline which allows multiple jumpers to use the bungee trampoline at the same time. However, there are also bungee trampolines designed for only one person at a time. Most of the bungee trampolines used today come with a client control apparatus, using a counter and a timer which can be easily operated by a single person. Recommended power supply for bungee trampolines is 110 or 230 volts and 10 amperes electrical outlet.

There are several models, types, and designs of bungee trampolines. Some of them have been modified to make the jumps more exciting and thrilling. For example, Forest Maxi Bungy Trampoline, captioned Maxi bungee trampoline fly in the trees (maxi-trampoline.com) features a harness and elastic system.which is connected to natural trees from 5 meters to 20 meters high construction. Participants (5 years and older, adults below 200 lbs.) can jump up to 20 meters and land on their feet in the middle of the trampoline. 230 volts or 110 volts is the average supply of power used by this bungee trampoline.

An example of a four person bungee trampoline:

Camp Cayuga (campcayuga.com), a private coed residential summer camp in Honesdale, Pennsylvania has introduced what it called the Big Trampoline Thing”, as a part of its extreme jumping sports program. This is the basic configuration of the bungee trampoline:

A large rig combines a trampoline system with a bungee cord system. The rig features 4 separate trampolines, so 4 people can be accommodated at one time. The patented Bungee Cord System includes a hydraulic lift that automatically readjusts the height settings on the rig as participants jump higher. With this safety feature, the bungee cord cannot be over-stretched while jumping, and catapult the jumper up to 24 feet in the air.

Bungee Trampoline jumping, like the regular bungee jumping, should be approached with caution because it can result in injuries like sprains, fractures, scrapes, bruises and cuts, or serious injuries to the head and neck which can cause paralysis, or even death. Children should always be supervised by adults, and inexperienced adult jumpers should seek the help of instructors or professionals.

Again, check to make sure that these are not subject to an expiry date or you may miss out on cheap digital camera offers.

At the end of the day there is nothing better than finding other shoppers who have bought a particular cheap digital camera. They can give you truly unbiased views about the camera itself and the place where they purchased it. You may want to pay a few dollars more to get a relatively cheap digital camera from another supplier if they have a lot of bad reviews from customers.

Hemorrhoids: What Are They?

November 30th, 2011

If you have hemorrhoids, it is important to learn what they are and how to treat them. There are specific symptoms and signs to look for to alert you as to whether you need to seek treatment or not. Knowing what these are will help you to know what treatment to look for. It is also important to learn where to seek help and to understand that hemorrhoids are very common for men and women and affect nearly 50% of the population.

Hemorrhoids are also known as Piles. They are found in the blood vessels close to the rectum and anus. The presence of hemorrhoids indicates that blood vessels in those areas have been stretched due to pressure. In this sense, they are similar to varicose veins found in the legs. Hemorrhoids can be caused by added strain on the blood vessels related to bowel movements.

Hemorrhoids are normally found in two areas. They are found in the skin area of the rectum, and in being located here are known as internal hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids found in the skin next to the anus are known as external hemorrhoids. Similar conditions that may exist in different areas may be a sign of digestive disease and should be seen by a doctor.

Hemorrhoids are typically diagnosed by bleeding in the areas of the rectum and anus. This bleeding is caused by pressure from blood vessels. Other symptoms may also help in diagnosing hemorrhoids. Inconsistent bowel movements, pain, itching, and severe discomfort in the region are all typical of the existence of hemorrhoids. It is recommended that your symptoms be checked by a doctor. It should also be pointed out that bleeding may also be a result of other digestive diseases.

Hemorrhoids may occur for several reasons. Pregnant women may develop them due to quick changes in weight. Hemorrhoids are common among those who are constipated or have difficult bowel movements that cause pressure. Pressure in this area for prolonged periods can directly cause hemorrhoids.

Once you have had hemorrhoids, you will likely have them again, though symptoms typically clear up and disappear on their own. More serious hemorrhoids will need medication and possibly surgery depending on the conditions associated with them. Over the counter medications may help to alleviate symptoms that are not severe as a temporary measure until medical treatment can be given.

It is important to know what hemorrhoids are, how they occur, and how treatment can help you. Understanding the seriousness of the problem and the consequences on you health and well being will help you in seeking the appropriate treatment. Hemorrhoids are very common and can easily be diagnosed and treated. The proper treatment can help you return to a normal lifestyle and take control of this problem.

Save the Children

November 30th, 2011

The poet Oscar Wild, wrote these moving lines: “Children begin by loving their parents. After some time, they judge their parents. Rarely, if ever, do they forgive them”. It is a well known fact that the well-being of today’s children is inseparable from the peace, progress and prosperity of tomorrow’s world. It is, therefore, important that children be nurtured in an environmentally sustainable pattern to promote national and global peace and progress. The importance of their welfare was underlined during the World Summit for Children in September, 1990, held under the auspices of the United Nations International Children Education Fund (UNICEF) where world leaders maintained that “unless the investment in children is made, all of humanity’s most fundamental long-term problems will remain fundamental long term problems”.

Put succinctly, children are a country’s most precious assets and they demand the highest priority on both national and international investments. In spite of this open acknowledgment of the importance of their survival to our collective global future, evidence abounds that children are facing the worst tragedy in the world today. In a recent seminar organised by the United Nations non-government liaison services in Geneva, participants at the seminar from more than 120 countries were in agreement that “millions of children around sub-Saharan Africa live under especially difficult circumstances where special protection measures are required to enable them enjoy fulfillment of their basic rights”. These children in addition to being poor, are exploited, abused, abandoned, neglected, disabled and deprived of liberty.

The greatest manifestations of child abuse, exploitation, deprivation and neglect are very obvious in situations where children are used as a veritable source of cheap labour, soldiers, and prostitutes against their innocent and passive will. Many children seldom report cases of such abuses against them and most child abusers rely on this fact to continue in their wicked acts. Child labour thrives in our societies today mainly because some employers consider it cheaper to employ and over-work children who have very weak resistance to exploitation and oppression than adults. Such employers often betray and take undue advantage of the innocence of children’s dependence and trust. Families also use child labour to make additional income. While some of the hapless children are engaged in domestic duties of hawking goods, others are made to do hard labour meant for adults. Some Non-Governmental Organisations, (NGOs) have continued to express their concern over this unfair practice that is conducted not only in Nigeria, but also in other countries of the world. In an interview granted to a newsmagazine, Mr. A.C. Onukwue, a director of Media Environment Initiative (MEI) in Nigeria said that “children as young as eight years old are being subjected to a bland agreement by their parents to serve as slaves all their childhood and youths in the name of apprenticeship”.

Those working as domestic servants are the most exploited and most difficult to protect. Most of them are girls who live with their employers and are totally dependent on them. The United Nations Organisation (UNO) and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) have made some legal provisions in their bid to checkmate this growing monster. Article 32 of the United Nations Convention of the rights of the child and article XV of the Organisation of African Unity Charter on the rights and welfare of the child, unanimously condemn child labour in all its ramifications. The two articles recognize “the rights of the child to be protected from economic exploitation and from performing any work that is likely to be hazardous, or to interfere with the child’s education or physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social developments”. In Asia, South America and some migrant communities in the United States, it has been reported that children even as young as five years of age are forced into what can be termed “slave labour”. They work like little robots in dreadful conditions that damage their immature bodies and minds. Most of them have no education, are homeless and deprived of parental love and care.

Children as Child-Labourers

Most people have argued that the main cause of child labour is poverty. Others are economic and social inequality, war, unemployment, broken homes and juvenile delinquency. The merchants of children peddle stories of pleasurable life awaiting the kids in the cities in order to entice their victims from their poverty-stricken parents. Most poor parents swallow such stories hook, line and sinker and so inadvertently release their children to the slave merchants. Because of the nature of their minds, children believe what they are told by adults without reservation. Some of them on hearing such false stories of bright future awaiting them at imaginary lands, sometimes sneak away from their homes to be taken away without their parents’ knowledge. Most of them also follow child merchants because their parents find it difficult to feed, clothe and train them in school. Though many children in the advanced industrial nations and in some urban centers of the Third World countries enjoy good care and welfare, yet it is obvious that majority of them in some rural and urban areas whose parents are living below subsistence level are more often exposed to this risk. The situation has been considered dangerous enough that it was brought to focus in 1997 at a forum organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the United Nations International Children Education Fund (UNICEF) for jourlalists in Lagos to deliberate upon. The theme of the forum was The Impact of Child Labour on Development. Participants at the forum agreed that child labour exists in Nigeria as in other parts of the world. It is interesting to note that most of these unsuspecting children lured from their homes in Nigeria are taken to Gabon in Central Africa and other neighbouring countries where they are subjected to the highest form of child abuse.

Children as Articles of Trade

But how widespread are cases of child abuse? Let us at this stage, embark on a historical excursion in order to reveal the extent of abuse and danger our children had been exposed to. On May 30, 1995 when 330 Nigerian deportees arrived in Calabar from Gabon, 109 of them were children below 16 years of age. Again, in March 1996, four students of Ikono Ibom Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikot Aya, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria were cajoled into embarking on a trip to Gabon by a fellow student. But these students, made up of three girls and a boy whose ages were between 10 and 14 years were lucky as they could not reach their destination. As fate would have it, officers of Nigerian Immigration Service intercepted their boat at the Oron Creek. And in January 1997, 150 Gabon-bound children were rescued from a camp at Mkpanak near Ibeno. Among the children aged between 11 and 18 years were 20 Nigerians. The rest of them came from neighbouring Togo, Benin Republic and Ghana. In February 1997, 86 under aged children were freed after a raid on an uncompleted building at Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State. It was reported that the nefarious dealers on children had intended to ship them to Gabon before they were rescued. A breakdown of the rescued children’s nationalities showed that 25 were from Nigeria, 23 from Togo while 38 were from Benin Republic. Of the 86 kids, 46 were girls.

It is also sad that not all of these children had been lucky. The hapless ones do not get to their destinations and do not live to tell their stories. In January 1996, more than 200 persons perished in the high seas of Ibeno Beach. About 73 per cent of the victims were school children, some of whom were in their school uniforms. These difficult circumstances represent serious hazards and risks to the survival and development of our future generation.

Children as Sex Tools

Apart from child labour and trafficking, sexual harassment is another area of high risk that confronts our children. Convincing indication of the enormity of this crime was tendered at the World Congress Against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1996 which was attended by representatives of 130 countries. For instance, it was documented that in several parts of the world, there are millions of young girls, some even as young as 10 years of age who are constrained to work as call girls. After years of physical, mental, and emotional molestation, these girls are scarred for life. In most cases, they surrender to this atrocity simply because they want to eat and stay alive. The option is like choosing between six and half a dozen. As a result of such abuse, some children develop social and psychiatric problems later in life. Furthermore, the activities of pedophiles who occupy influential positions in our society do not help matters. Pedophile refers to a psychological disorder which causes adults to be sexually attracted to children whose sexual experience is nil. In August 1997, a Dublin Chief Judge, Cyril Kelly, committed Reverend Berndan Smith a 72 -year old Roman Catholic priest to 12 years imprisonment for a case involving 74 count charges of indecent and sexual assaults against children. Rev. Smith who admitted to a 36-year career of sex offenses against a total of 26 children in the Republic of Ireland, pleaded guilty to the charges. The Daily Telegraph of June 2, 1998 carried a report on a 44-year old soccer coach who used his position of trust to abuse young boys. He was jailed for nine years after pleading guilty to 23 specimen charges against children. The Chester Crown Court was told that from 1978 to 1992, the coach invited boys from the North West and Midlands to stay with him or go on holiday to North Wales and Spain where the offenses took place. According to The Daily Telegraph: “Benndell would take the boys into his trust by offering them the chance of not only training with his teams but also an occasion at Grewe Alexandra and Manchester City”.

Children As Child Soldiers

Compounding the tragedy further, there has been an increase in the use of child soldiers in guerrilla armies. Children are easily kidnapped, separated from their parents and siblings and conscripted into the army to fight wars. In such situations they are systematically brutalized, at times by being forced to watch gruesome murder. Some have been ordered to kill their own parents, brothers and/or sisters. Where they find it difficult to carry out these bloody assignments as a result of their innocence, such children are encouraged and compelled to take drugs in order to heighten their killer instinct. In Freetown, Sierra Leone, child soldiers whose innocence had been destroyed by the crimes of a protracted civil war resolved that they were not going to hands-off arms. They took the resolution in October, 1998 when Carol Bellamy the then UNICEF’s head in Sierra Leone, asked them in Bo to surrender their weapons. The child soldiers belonged to the hunter militia group known as Kamajor. In addition, children generally suffer a high death rate during civil or international wars. Most of them die of hunger or hunger related diseases such as kwashiorkor. Because they are fragile and defenseless, they are easy victims in war situations. On August 31, 1997 about 21 children fell into a swimming pool in panic and got drowned in Nsele, 60 kilometers east of Kinshasa, capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo when some armed troops tried to maintain order in the area. In Northern Uganda, rebels of the Lords Resistance Army (LRA), headed by Joseph Kony, who have been fighting against the Ugandan government have continued to carry out atrocities against children in that country.

It is interesting to note that children are gradually becoming aware of the injustice and oppression against them by the adult world. In July 1997, Eric Ndelema, a councilor from Kaziso, West Rand, was stoned to death by an irate mob of about 200 primary school children. The mob also set his house ablaze. Mary Martins, a sergeant and South African Police spokesman, confirmed the incident that occurred in Johannesburg but said that the motive for the attack was not yet known. If the cause of the attack was not known, perhaps the peaceful demonstration that was carried out by children from January 5 to June 4, 1998 is enough proof that children are gradually getting fed up with the whole game. Pakistan played host to the global march against child labour in April, 1998 as part of a campaign to draw world attention to children’s rights. The campaigners, numbering about 45,000 children from various countries, walked through Manila, Vietnam, Thailand, India and Geneva into the boarder town of Wahgah, 25 kilometers from Lahore, capital of Pakistan, amidst cheers from the citizens. Kailash Trithay, the leader of the demonstration said his group was carrying a message from every working child that “the world should be free of child abuse”.

In spite of the above facts, which are by no means exhaustive, it appears that not many countries of the world have taken definitive stand against this global monster of child abuse which is threatening to turn our God-given children into slaves and make this world an unsafe place for those who are undoubtedly our leaders of tomorrow. The situation quickly calls to mind, the admonition of an erudite scholar, Martin Luther King, who once remarked that “the world is full of evil today not because of those who do evil, but because of men who keep silent and watch evil being done”.

Mechanics Veto Extending Oil Changes

November 30th, 2011

The nation’s top mechanics are rejecting the recommendation by some in the auto field that cars can go 5,000 miles or more before oil is changed.

National Institute for Auto-motive Service Excellence (ASE)-certified Master Automobile technicians weighed in on this and other issues in a survey conducted by Valvoline. The survey covered the controversial recommendation and trend toward longer intervals between oil changes, as well as the costs to car owners of delayed maintenance.

“Certified Master Automobile Technicians are the best of the best,” said ASE President Ron Weiner. “They are on the front lines of taking care of today’s vehicles and they have definite thoughts on how motorists can participate in making their cars and trucks run better and last longer.”

Oil Change Frequency

Mechanics view oil as the lifeblood of the car engine, with 84 percent saying not getting a regular oil change can cause the most problems for a vehicle, when compared to other maintenance issues. Sixty percent said the oil should be changed at 3,000 miles-the longtime, recommended standard.

According to the survey, Valvoline remains the number one choice of ASE Master Automobile Technicians for use in their own cars and trucks, and is the brand of motor oil most recommended by them to customers, friends and relatives.

“Changing oil with quality motor oil, like Valvoline, at regular intervals is the best way to prevent damage to your car’s engine and keep more money in your pocket,” said Valvoline Marketing Director Bryan Emrich. He added that regular oil changes protect the engine and reduce sludge, which can impact engine perfor-mance and cause costly repairs.

Delayed Car Maintenance

While car owners know, intellectually and intuitively, that regular maintenance is important to keeping their four-wheeled investment in safe condition and working order, the reality is that more and more Americans are not listening to conventional and proven wisdom.

The vast majority of mechanics-87 percent-said they believe American car owners are putting off routine maintenance, mostly for cost reasons. Ironically, they overwhelmingly said-at 97 percent-that delayed care will cost an owner much more in the long run, as problems left unattended can multiply and lead to other issues.

Sports Gear: When Comfort, Fashion And Safety Go Together.

November 29th, 2011

There are so many sports that people are involved in these days. No wonder sports gear becomes one of the top search items. The term sports gear implies a variety of sport related things from clothing and footwear to equipment and accessories. From individual to team sports, certain kinds of sports gear are designed specifically for each sport or activity. Actually, you dont have to be professionally in for sports to use sports gear. Many people find it comfortable and handy for traveling, gym workouts or even some of your ordinary everyday activities. Sports gear is particularly popular with teenagers; and finally, there is hardly anyone who doesnt possess at least a pair of sneakers and a couple of T-shirts.

Sportswear

When it comes to sports gear, one of the most important items is the right clothing. The pieces of clothing are specifically designed to make every sporting event a little easier to participate in. If you are a soccer player, obviously, you will want to wear clothing that allows enough room to breathe but doesnt interfere with your movement. Playing football means you need a jersey and some tights designed to hold all of the protective padding. In spite of a few restrictions (sports gear designs have to follow certain rules and traditions according to every particular sport), fashion reigns in this area as well, creating new functional materials and adding more style to comfort.

Footwear

Whether you enjoy your sport activity or hate it depends upon your footwear a lot. This is, probably, the most important piece of sports gear, critical in some cases. If your athletic shoes fail, you will be left barefoot or whats worse, injured. You will need appropriate type of arch support during your activity, thats where sneakers are the best. They should be properly fitted and be appropriate for the sport or activity and playing surface. Such factors as torsion, flexion, midsole density and heal counter are decisive while purchasing sports footwear.

Protective gear

For those participating in active sports protective gear is essential as they are most prone to injures. Shin pads, shoulder and body protectors, wrist, elbow and knee guards, helmets, ankle tapping and braces, mouth guards, gloves and so on, all are called to prove the fact that prevention is the key. For every sport there is specific and appropriate protective equipment. It should always fit a person correctly and be used according to manufacturers guidelines and the recommendations of the sporting body concerned. Needless to say, protective gear should be maintained properly and checked regularly.

Accessories

Jewelry and stuff like that often viewed as something absolutely out of place in sports. However, the items are in demand and sometimes can really compliment to your look if you know how to match them. Besides, stylish watch with favorite team logo or, say, a nice sporting bag can make a perfect gift for an occasion. And, of course, there are certain accessories you cannot do without if you are in for a particular sport. Imagine snowboarding without a board or playing golf without a club and a ball.

Once you determine what type of equipment, clothing, and footwear you need, you can try to find the best deal on your items. With great selection of brand names and sellers its easy to find something suitable, functional and stylish for each individual.

Although a good price is important, your comfort and safety are more important. Look for quality products at fair prices, not cheap prices for bad products.

Let’s Get On The Ball!

November 29th, 2011

The stability ball has fast become a popular tool for exercising. Primarily used in a rehabilitation facility by therapists, you can now find them on many gym floors, on your local sporting good store shelves and at your LIVE on line store as well. It offers many different exercises for all fitness levels, from beginners to advanced athletes. They are great for working the entire body, not just for abs, as youll find many ads marketing this way. Youll find it a challenging and exciting way to add variety and fun to your workouts. In conjunction with improving your overall strength and muscle tone, it can help improve you core strength, posture, balance, and coordination.

The stability ball can be used in place of a bench for many exercises, and for a variety of stretches as well. It also makes a great office chair since your core muscles will work to keep upright posture. Unlike a bench, a ball will move under you, at every angle, side to side and back and forth while performing certain exercises. So to keep the ball from moving, and perform an exercise, your body is coordinating multiple muscle groups to work together throughout every exercise you do.

When sitting on the ball to perform exercises like a dumbbell shoulder press or bicep curl, your core muscles will fire as they try to stabilize the ball underneath your hips. Lift one foot off the ground slightly and youll find yourself working even harder to stay on top of the ball.

If you are thinking about purchasing your own ball to incorporate it into your workout program, here are some buying tips in case youre not sure which ball you should be using. When seated on the top of a stability ball your knees should be even with your hips or slightly above. Larger, softer balls are great for de-conditioned, or those who might be rand new to working out, overweight, or mature populations. The firmer the ball the more difficult the exercises are to perform; the softer the ball the easier exercises are to perform.

45cm- used for shorter (under 5 ft).
55cm- used for most people
65cm-used for taller (over 6 ft).

A stability ball is a great tool that can offer a challenge to your workouts. All age groups and all fitness levels can incorporate the right stability ball exercises to improve your balance, strength, posture and coordination. But with a challenge, comes a more exciting workout that will help you to achieve better results while having fun during your workout.

Oversleeping- the opposite of Insomnia?

November 29th, 2011

When it comes to sleep disorders, the more common complaints are from people who are having trouble falling asleep and getting “quality” sleep.

Not much have been said about those on the others side of the coin. Some people have the opposite problem. They sleep too much

I personally used to sleep up to 14 hours a “night”. Sometimes I’d hit the snooze button for HOURS.

Improving the quality of my sleep was absolutely necessary in order to reduce the amount of sleep I get. After replacing a few bad habits, I now sleep less and feel much more lively and energetic throughout the day, then when I had slept longer.

However, improving the quality of my sleep was only one part of the process.

If you’re sleeping too much and having trouble getting yourself out of bed, it’s not only because of some bad sleeping habits.

As you know, when you wake up you’re not completely in control of your thoughts and your actions. At this stage your subconscious is more dominant.

You may have to admit having some kind of emotional issues, which are suppressed deeply in your subconscious.

Oversleeping can obviously CAUSE problems. The embarrassment when you fail to wake up on time, being late to work or loss of what could be your “free time”, and the tiredness that usually comes after an excessive sleep episode, all of those aren’t going to do you any good.

You should start putting your sleep system back to order, by going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day, no matter when you’ve gone to sleep, no matter what time you go to work, and even if you have a day off.

Practice it for at least 3 weeks (they say it takes 21 days to establish a new habit).

However, if you fail to wake up on time, you should focus on self-discipline first.

You see, most people wake up on time every morning, no matter how much or how well they had slept.

Don’t beat yourself up when you fail. Instead, try to think what went wrong. Try to remember your actions and your thoughts at that morning. Then come up with a plan for tomorrow.

If you cant even remember what went through your head when the alarm went off, try going to sleep earlier or setting the alarm to a later time.

Most importantly, dig inside yourself to find the reason you oversleep. Ask yourself a simple, yet hard question: “What are you running away from”?

Depression: The Downward Spiral

November 29th, 2011

We all heard about the Blue Mood or comments like Oh she’s got the blues today. But what does that exactly mean? Actually, the term blues is another word used to describe a person who has depression. Being depressed is a normal human response to a sad, unfortunate, or tragic incident. Depression can be the result of having unrealistic expectations like for instance a person aiming for this particular position ends up being by-passed because he doesn’t fit the qualifications. He may feel so down and angry about not getting the position even if deep in his heart, he knows that he is not really right for the job. People get depressed about different things at varying degrees. But one thing is for sure, depression affects people from all walks of life.

Fitness And Pilates

November 29th, 2011

People today are starting to understand the importance of good health, which is achieved through a well balanced diet, cutting out smoking and drinking, and incorporating some type of fitness program into daily life. While there are some excellent opportunities such as walking, swimming, tennis, handball, or working out in the gym, another option includes Pilates, which has taken our society by storm. In addition to being fun, Pilates is easy on the body while producing outstanding results.

Pilates involves a system of movement coupled with therapeutic exercise. This particular fitness program took Joseph H. Pilatu over 60 years to perfect. In addition to helping people look better by toning and firming the body, Pilates makes people feel better. Through precision toning and bringing balance to muscles at the joint area, this fitness method stimulates circulation by using muscular flexibility, proper musculoskeletal alignment, and range of motion.

Pilates also offers better body awareness while promoting coordination and creating new neuromuscular patterns. The result of this fitness program is a reduction or complete elimination of chronic pain and/or injury or re-injury. Joseph himself grew up with arthritis and asthma, making him feeble. His father was a prize-winning gymnast and his mother a practicing naturopath. Using a discarded anatomy book, Joseph studied and studied to better understand the various body parts. By the age of 14, he had learned how to develop his own body, so much so that he was hired as an anatomy model for other students to study.

With Joseph’s knowledge and fine-tuning of this fitness method, he and his wife began teaching Pilates. What is Children’s Literature?

November 28th, 2011

It may seem strange to think that there is some question as to what constitutes a children.s book for many after all this would seem like a question with an obvious answer. A children’s book was after all created for children. However Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain one of the books considered to be classical children’s literature was originally intended for adults and as indeed received some past censorship because of how interpret it was considered for children. The Grimm’s fairy tales also where written initially for adults, yet they where bought for children. This situation of children taking over what was supposed to be an book for adults has led to many problems. After all society then complains that the story was not appropriate for children, and so attacks to book. Further the book not being appropriate for children perhaps does cause some social problems. Yet we still seem to consider many such books as children’s literature.

Why is it books written for adults become children’s books? Or at least books read by children. Although it is perhaps impossible to state all the reasons for this situation, I would forward three theories on ways in which this can occur.

The first reason is that a book offers a fantastic reality, an imaginative story, children like such stories and so for whatever reason it is presumed that such imaginativeness is in the realm of children’s literature. This could for example be the case with Gulliver’s Travels and of course the Grimm’s Fairy Tales. In many ways I would argue it’s sad that if a story is fun and imaginative it is automatically pushed off into the realm of children. Not that children’s literature is lesser, indeed this imaginativeness has helped in many ways to make it superior to that created for adults. Rather it is sad that adults do not presume that such creative genius is worth more of their time.

Another reason which a book might become children’s literature is that it is about a child, for some reason a child character makes people automatically assume a child should read it, as if they are the only ones who can relate to a child. This is a ridiculous notion of course, we where all children and besides of which all such books where written by intelligent adults.

The final reason I will propose is that many books and works of art intended for adults become children’s as a means of expanding their reach or extending their life. This is why for example one will find the works of Jane Austen in the children’s literature section at the book store with a little charm.

This still does not answer the question of what is children’s literature. Part of the problem here may be that we have not yet truly defined the question, broad questions have broad answers. The question may be what should parents have their children read, or what should educators and those studying children’s literature study in order to learn about the impact of literature on children? In the case of the first question the answer is in regards to the parents beliefs and their kids reaction to things. If a parent does not believe their kid should be exposed to something then it does not constitute children’s literature for that kid. This definition of course makes the whole field of children’s books very difficult as there are so many differing views on what is acceptable for children to read.

However this problem would beg the question, is the purpose of the definition to help people study children’s literature or to help parents decide which books their kids can read? In the case of the purpose for study children’s literature would constitute all books which children regularly read. After all the purpose of study is to determine what is acceptable to read and what impact such readings have on children, as will as ways to make future books better. For this purpose to be effective all books which children read must be included.

Part of the difficulty of course with determining what constitutes children’s literature is that there is some debate as to what children are.

After all different cultures have at times believed many different things about children. However I would point out that this in and of itself is exactly the point, childhood is viewed as different by different cultures. It is then a cultural definition, one which our society can answer and change. Certainly it is difficult for people to accept this idea, and for many the idea that the culture determines someone’s role is tantamount to prejudice, however when it comes to defining a state and an impact we are indeed looking at cultural variables. One cannot for example assume that a picture book based on the Impressionist style, and with Swedish Motifs would have the same impact on Americans as it does Japanese or Swedes. It is culture which determines the role literature plays in our lives so it is through a cultures definitions of something that that thing should be defined. Further accepting one cultures definition of what defines children and not another’s is prejudice.

In American culture this definition of child has been constructed in a way as Minors to the age of 18, however not all of these ages are considered children per say, they are teenagers, pre-teens, Elementary, Preschool, Toddlers and more. However as a society we have defined these groups and so a wish to understand their demographic must begin with the societies definitions of them. Arguing that a culture is wrong is often a mute point, just as literature is a social construct many of the emotions and impact surrounding it are too.

Children’s literature then according to my definition and the definition which will be found throughout this site is literature which impacts directly through reading a fairly decent percentage of the population which is considered children by the culture it is from.

Or in the case of cross-cultural analysis such impacts will extend to ages determined by the culture with the oldest children or the largest definition of them. Why? Because in many cases especially historical ones children where considered adults fairly young, yet if we want to compare differences in impact between 8 year olds we must study both sets of 8 year olds. It is important to stress that this is not a means to push one cultures definition on another it is merely a research construct intended to help study literature, so that we can better understand its impact.

Ty Hulse has degree’s in art and psychology with both with a children’s and a cross-cultural focus. He is currently working to create the site Zeluna.net which discusses Children’s Literature and Picture Books, as will as Fairy Tales.

The Real Secret To Quickly Buying An Electric Scooter

November 28th, 2011

If this doesnt get you excited, then nothing will! Electric scooters can be bought for sometimes as much as 50% off if you can be just a little patient and know where to look. Electric scooters are incredibly fun these days, and theyve seemed to have taken the world by storm. I see several of them all the time riding up and down my street here in Houston, and Ive read that they are popular in many European countries.

What a lot of people dont know is that there is a way to get your new electric scooter a discount using an old tactic in a slightly new way. Its called price comparison (and a little bit patience). Yes, this is an old tactic, but it still works. And it works really well. The internet makes it really easy to do this as long as you put in just a little leg work. Heres how I would go about looking for a new electric scooter.

1) Start at Froogle.com. This is Googles shopping search engine where you can look for whatever it is you need. Try searching for electric scooter, electric scooter sale or even electric scooter discount. This should yield an impressive number of electric scooter retailer competing for your business. Write down the best prices and deal you see.

2) Run the same searches on regular Google.com. Pay attention to the right hand side ads. Generally, the right hand side ads are sponsored ads which vendors pay a lot of money (often over $1/click) to place their ads on the right hand side of the results for certain keyword they bid on in a sort of virtual keyword auction. Visit some sites and write down the best deals you see here.

3) Run the same searches on Yahoo.com. Pay attention to the right hand side sponsored ads. Yahoo owns Overture which handles their pay-per-click business. Often you will find different vendors advertising on Yahoo than Google. You want to compare as many different electric scooter companies as possible. They more the bestter. This is why it is worth visiting Yahoo, not just Google. Visit some sites and write down the best deals you see here.

4) Now visit Ebay and run a search for electric scooter and electric scooters. Write down the results and watch some auctions for a week or so. Write down the prices you see things being sold for. You can usually press the watch this auction in MyEbay as a sort of bookmark so you can watch all the sales that happen for particular items.

5) Come back in 2 weeks and do it all over again. At the end of this you will be able to know that youve done a lot of research and you will know where the best deals are.

Overall, I wouldnt be surprised if you could save more than 50% on a new electric scooter doing this. After all, you did the work: you are entitled to getting paid for it. There are more tricks than this, and this isnt all of it. But its a start to getting you your new electric scooter.

Why Do All Songs Are About Love

November 27th, 2011

Do we listen to music when we are in love and we are happy? No, we usually do.’t. We then listen to the music of our hearts that beat in tune to the one beloved.

We listen to songs about love when it is bad times for our love or when we are lovesick.

Pragmatically the musicians know that songs about suffering love are the most money-making. The reason is that people want somebody to be present near them in times they are in love grief, for somebody to articulate their suffering. It is called empathy in psychology. This is the process when somebody shares the same feelings as you do. Musicians are psychologists. They cure our souls with their music.

On the other hand: too much of sad depressive music catalyzes of your sufferings. Some bands even “advise” their addressees to jump off the roof. Think one has to perceive that very figuratively. Such suicidal motifs can be mostly found in the repertoire of “Muse”.

The lexicon of the songs about love is also so crammed with the words like “broken”, “hurt”, “heart”, “only you”. “Radiohead” uses also the word “bruise” as the alternative. And the pronoun “you” is the most widely used.

The saddest thing is that everybody who listens to a song about love imagines oneself at the place of the singing one and always wants to address the one he/she loves but is unable of that.

Still, songs about love prove that this feeling is not only the chain of chemical reactions. It is more than that…

Alternative Ways To Help Quit Smoking

November 27th, 2011

The methods used to help a person quit smoking are as varied as smokers themselves. Some people find that they can quit smoking just by will power alone, going cold turkey and butting out forever. Others may find that in order to stop smoking they may have to enlist the help of others in the form of a support group or other network. Others turn to methods such as the patch or some types of chewing gum. As cultures begin to merge, however, there are more and more medical practices that have previously been unknown to Western science that may have many benefits to those who wish to stop smoking. Some of these alternative methods are discussed in this article.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture originated in China. It is the practice of inserting long, thin needles into various acupuncture points on the body, which is said to restore mental health and well being. As with many Far East ideas, acupuncture is concerned with restoring balance as a whole, rather than applying the health theories of the West to any one assigned area. The piercing points are areas which help to shock the body back into a healthy balance. Acupuncture is highly debated in medical circles, and studies have never conclusively proven that it is an effective treatment for anything at all. However, many patients who have undergone this treatment sweat by its results, and thus it may indeed be an effective tool when it comes to the battle to quit smoking. Addiction, after all, is in part a mental affliction, and thus if a patient believes that a treatment is working then it is possible that it is doing so. Additionally, acupuncture has been demonstrated to assist in the release of endorphins, the full effects of which on the body as a whole are still unknown to some degree.

Hypnosis: Another method that many smokers try to use when attempting to quit is hypnosis. It is vital that hypnosis be understood in its rightful context, rather than the societal myth. Hypnosis works along the same lines as subliminal messaging; by applying the power of suggestion to a subject who is concentrating on another matter, it is possible to affect the thinking processes of the brain. In this way, hypnosis can be used to curb the cravings that come with nicotine addiction and often lead the smoker to relapse.

There are also several changes to lifestyle that can be made in order to increase the amounts of dopamine found within the body. Dopamine is the active ingredient in Zyban, and levels of dopamine can be increased through a higher protein intake, stress reduction, and by taking vitamins and herbs such as Indian ginseng and magnesium.

Despite these methods and there levels of success, however, it is important to note that the key ingredient when it comes to smoking cessation is will power. No matter which other method you choose to assist you in ending the cravings and lessening the physical symptoms of withdrawal, sooner or later it is going to come down to your ability to say no to a cigarette that will ensure the end of the habits hold on your life.

Green Tea A Healthy Alternative To Soda

November 27th, 2011

In the hot days of summer it is easy to reach for a soda to help you cool off. However sodas do not really quench your thirst and there are some other healthier more refreshing alternatives. One of the most refreshing ways to cool off on a hot summer day is drinking a tall glass of iced tea and what better than making it green tea?

People From the Orient have long known the benefits of drinking green tea. In fact so important is this drink in these countries that there is special tea drinking rituals associated with this beverage. Japan is especially famous for this.

Green tea: Is made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis tree. The best green tea is grown in Japan and is harvested in the spring months. Now Australia is trying to cultivate it so that green tea can be available in other months and supply the increasing need for this beverage. Recent research is revealing that this tea is particularly beneficial for your health. It is higher in antitoxins than the traditional black tea drunk in the West. Green tea has also been found to have vitamin C and fluoride.

Green tea has more of these properties than the traditional black teas because of the way it is processed It goes through little or no processing (fermenting or oxidizing) this brings out the antioxidants and vitamins but will reduce the stimulant quality (caffeine) of this tea.

The best way to make green tea hot or cold is to make it with loose leaves. These are easily available in many grocery stores and most health food stores. When making iced tea it is good to steep the tea for about 20-30 minutes. You can just pour the hot water on it and let it cool slowly. Fast cooling will not allow the full taste to come out; so slow cooling at room temperature is best.

You can also make some good tea pops. Just fill an ice cube tray with green tea (cooled) and put toothpicks in each square and enjoy when fully frozen. You can also make regular cubes of green tea to add to beverages.

If you want to spice up your tea you can add citrus peel as it steeps. Anise and chicory are also added for a change in taste. Citrus peels are especially refreshing with iced green tea. You can also add ginger as a real thirst quencher for those hot days.

However you chose to drink your green tea it is a nice refreshing change from soda and good for your health. It will not only quench your thirst but rejuvenate you too. As our world grows smaller we are becoming more aware of different types of foods and beverages. As more research is being done on this increasingly popular drink we will see even more benefits to our health. It is recommended to drink at least 3 cups or more per day to enjoy the health giving properties of green tea.

Web Coach Tip: How To Tap Local Markets Using The Yellow Pages In Addition To Your Website.

November 26th, 2011

Copyright 2006 TheWebCoach.net

This week Im adding the final touches to my Yellow Pages (YP) ad. Let me share my experience in this process with 12 tips for you to use.

#1 DONT follow the advice of the YP sales rep about what to put in your ad. The sales rep is NOT a sales copywriter! Their main commission-based objective is selling you the ad space, not your bottom line. In the beginning my rep said all the other web development companies have these features listed in their ad, you should too. Im sure my clients in the South Pacific heard my mouth hit the floor! One of the most important aspects of YP advertising is being able to STAND OUT from your competition. So I politely thanked him for his suggestion: but Im writing my own ad mister!

#2 Buy the LARGEST ad space you can afford. Size Matters! All of the web folks in my YP directory have purchased the 1 X 1 inch block with one color for $79 a month. BORING! I can tell immediately that these web folks have very little marketing sense. This is fine by me because my dollar-bill-sized ad is 6 times larger, and only $207 a month. Be sure to ask about ad specials; thats what I did and got a huge ad. (mine WAS a $500 ad, but thru incentives I was able to get it down to $207) The advantage of a larger ad is placement on the page. The largest ad usually gets placed on the top outer corner of the page, not stuck near the crease or middle of the book where statistics have proven a lower response rate.

#3 The Headline. This is CRUCIAL! Your Headline must be EXTRAORDINARY. People scan the YP just like a newspaper so your headline had better be a good one. Remember folks scan ads asking themselves, Whats in it for me? Remember; BENEFITS not features of your services and your Unique Selling Position. 5 elements of a USP are: Price, Product, Process, Service, and Marketing. Yours has to be different, better, and more appealing than all the others.

#4 Always, Always, Always have a GUARANTEE. A general guarantee is ok, but a PERSONAL guarantee means a lot more. Ie. If your not satisfied for any reason, well re-do our work and if you STILL arent satisfied Ill refund 100% of their money back.

#5 TESTIMONIALS, hello? A seriously under-used piece of marketing. Nothing sells your services better than a testimonial from a happy customer.

#6 The OFFER! Killem with kindness! Being kind or nice softens the hard-sell aspect of your ad. My ad has two offers: one after my phone number that says Free Friendly Advice. And the other is a valuable item for my niche market Free download – QuickStart Web Workbook. These two offers cover folks who dont have internet access and those who do, so folks can reach me easily.

#7 Always have a LOCAL phone number. Studies have shown that people are more drawn to the local phone number than a toll-free listing. If you want to get high-tech you can also have a toll free number to a special recorded information line. This does two things. Weeds out the wrong type of customer and gives prospects you WANT to do business with more info about your services. This conveniently helps shorten your sales cycle. By listening to the recorded call, the customer is ready to hire you by the time they finally speak with you. (get really crafty in the beginning of the message and say stay tuned for a special offer at the end of this message this ensures they listen to the entire message and you can offer, say $20 off or whatever.)

#8 Photos and graphics. Studies show that ads with photos do better than those that dont. Just make sure the photo you use is relevant to your service. Or, use YOUR photo next to your guarantee.

#9 CALL-TO-ACTION! Tell people exactly what to do. Call now to schedule an appointment, Call now for a complimentary coaching session, “Call today and we’ll clean your carpet tomorrow”

#10. Build VALUE and CREDIBILITY. The overall message of your ad should evoke a direct response from the reader. Building value and credibility will almost always guarantee a response.

#11 DO NOT list your fees. Whatever you do, DO NOT list your price or fees in the ad and makes you look cheap. Why? Because it discounts the value of your service. Then you get calls from folks who dont understand the true value of what you do asking “What do you charge?” By reading your ad value ridden ad, folks are more willing to pay what youre worth. Not to mention folks who DONT WANT the cheapest guy out there and are willing to pay premium prices for quality. (Quick story: I was very pregnant in the summer- my central air conditioning went out – I called the best looking ad in the yellow pages at 7pm the guy fixed my air within 2 hours and only charged me $67. I would have GLADLY paid $567 I wanted quality service RIGHT NOW and didnt care what it cost!)

#12 DO NOT put your name or logo at the top of your ad. Nor should they be larger in size than the headline. If your headline commands attention, the reader will grab a magnifying glass to find your business name and contact info if they have to.

Inkjet Refill Kits The Economical And Environmentally Friendly Way To Reduce Printing Cost

November 26th, 2011

Inkjet printing is the most popular printing technology for home users and small businesses. Inkjet printers are versatile, inexpensive and produce good printing quality. The price of inkjet printers has dropped considerably over the past few years but the cost of replacement ink cartridges remains extremely high.

To reduce the printing cost, consumers are looking for cheap alternatives. There are many options available, such as compatible / generic cartridges or remanufactured / refurbished cartridges. But the most economical and environmentally friendly way is to use the inkjet refill kits.

For example, a typical name brand replacement cartridge costs $20-30. The price of a dual refill kit is only $10, which can refill the ink cartridge twice. That means consumers can save 75-80% buying one refill kit instead of two new cartridges. Refilling old cartridges is also good for the environment. It saves landfill space to dispose used cartridges and extra resources to produce new cartridges.

Most people can refill the cartridges themselves. One customer was quoted saying It is not difficult at all, I just follow the instructions and my ink cartridge is good as new in 10 minutes. Nevertheless, some precautions should be taken when refilling your own ink cartridges.

In general, the cartridge should be refilled before it has run out of ink. If printing continues after the ink has run dry, the cartridge’s nozzle may burn out and be permanently damaged. Once the nozzle is damaged, it is impossible to reuse the cartridge. In addition, refilling the cartridge with too much ink can also cause it to overflow or uneven absorption of ink into the sponge, resulting in ink leakage and poor print output.

To learn more about inkjet refill kits and to find out whether they are available for your printer model, please visit the following website: http://inkjets.4reviews.net/refill_kit.htm

A Better Way To Prepare And Protect America For Catastrophes

November 26th, 2011

Contrary to popular belief, the epicenter of the strongest earthquake to ever strike the continental U.S. was not in California, but in Missouri. It was so powerful that it changed the course of the Mississippi River.

Twenty states, including Hawaii and every state that borders the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, face the threat of hurricanes every year.

As the population of the U.S. has swelled, so has the risk of Americans facing a catastrophe, whether it’s a tornado, hurricane, flood or earthquake.

Home values have also increased in areas prone to natural disasters, and many of those homeowners have their net worth tied up in their homes. This puts their biggest financial asset at risk.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita revealed America is not as prepared for natural disasters as it should be. While we can’t stop them from occurring, we can do a better job preparing and protecting America from their consequences.

National coalitions such as Pro tectingAmerica.org, comprised of emergency management officials, first responders, disaster relief experts, insurers and others, are advocating ideas that would help prepare Americans to deal with the consequences of natural disasters before they occur.

One solution is the creation of privately funded, government- sponsored catastrophe funds. These funds would accumulate money in advance of catastrophes, and would be funded by a portion of the insurance premiums collected by private insurers. At the state level, the funds could cover restoration from local disasters. At the federal level, there could be a catastrophe fund that covers losses that can’t be covered by one state. Money would not be accessed until needed, and would grow tax-free to help pay for future losses.

Besides catastrophe funds, other solutions could include strengthening first responders, improving building codes, and sensible land use policies.

While a better solution is still in the works, there are some things you can do now to prepare for catastrophes:

• Become familiar with your community’s disaster preparedness plan and develop a plan for your family.

• Prepare an emergency supply kit including a three-day supply of bottled water, nonperishable food, a manual can opener, paper plates, cups, utensils, first-aid kit, flashlight and battery-operated radio with extra batteries.

• Organize documents in waterproof containers. Include financial information, important phone numbers, wills, insurance policies, immunization records and passports.

• Prepare an inventory of your personal property and videotape your household contents.
